Throughout the District, there is an increased focus on making green, renewable energy equitable and accessible for everyone. The DC Solar for All program is helping leverage solar resources to share benefits throughout the District.

In “Power to the People,” the third episode of the DC Solar Stories Documentary Series, the DC Department of Energy and Environment (DOEE) discusses how energy savings through Solar for All is helping families feel empowered.

This episode looks at Groundswell’s solar installation at Dupont Park Seventh-Day Adventist Church and other projects in the District and how they are impacting families who struggle with energy costs.

“We believe that it is just as important to take that renewable resource and leverage it — meaning you generate solar on top of a roof, and then you share it with folks who don’t live under that roof,” said DC DOEE Director Tommy Wells in the video. “We’re using solar, and we’re transferring the benefits to low-income residents in Washington, D.C.

Those benefits are already clear to participants who have subscribed to the Solar for All installation at Dupont Park Seventh-Day Adventist Church, which has also provided the church with a new way to help the community.

“This program was an opportunity to further our inroads into the community — to say, ‘Look, we have a program that will benefit the residents of this neighborhood,” said Clarence Moseley, Head Deacon of Dupont Park Seventh-Day Adventist Church in the video.

Moseley personally saw the impact that the Solar for All program had on his mother when she saw a reduction in her energy bill after signing up. Residents throughout the District are now feeling these benefits.

“What solar does is turn back around and provide advantages that lift up a family and the community,” said Lenwood Coleman, Groundswell’s Chief Program Officer, in the video.

DC Solar For All is a program run by DOEE and was established by a pioneering law championed by Mayor Muriel Bowser and passed by the DC City Council in July 2016.
