Community Solar at the Discalced Carmelite Friars of Washington, D.C.

The Monastery of Our Lady Mt. Carmel in northeast Washington, D.C. is located on a serene, 5-acre campus that is home to the Discalced Carmelite Friars. The Discalced Carmelite Friars of Washington, D.C. are called to a quiet life of prayer, contemplation and service. They are seeking to establish a greater connection with the community surrounding the monastery and make a positive contribution to it as part of their mission of service. Groundswell is grateful to be partnering with the Friars to establish a community solar project that will comprise a combined rooftop and ground-mount system including pollinator-friendly PV.  This system will be built at no cost to the Discalced Carmelite Friars, and will produce affordable solar energy that will be available to households in the surrounding community at a lower price than traditional energy.

We anticipate breaking ground on this project in early 2018. Soon, we will begin reaching out to our community with the opportunity to pre-enroll to receive solar energy from this project, beginning with the residents who have already expressed interest in community solar by signing up through our website.
