Supporting Each Other

Supporting each other is one of Groundswell’s founding principles. This — and our commitment to providing a model that truly empowers our subscribers and their communities — is why we’ve taken a small step back from our usual social media and marketing efforts to introduce a new concert series at Groundswell called Prepare for Power. Through art, fresh perspectives, and performances by up and coming performers from across the country, we hope that we can transport you beyond the news of the day and into a space where you feel supported, inspired, and hopeful.

I make music when I’m not at Groundswell. It’s almost all I ever do. Especially now, because of what it reminds me of. I grew up with singers and performers. Going back — as long as anyone in my family can remember — we’ve always been that. There’s a deep peace that making and listening to music brings me, which is probably why I spend so much time doing it. It’s always amazing for me to think that every song I hear was made from nothing. And something about that makes most songs, at their core, interesting to me. Something from nothing — fascinating.

So, when I first saw the impact that COVID-19 was having on black communities and the murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Brianna Taylor, I turned to music. That’s how I could feel supported. There’s something about that “something,” coming from “nothing” that helps me remember that as a people, and as a movement, there’s still something worth reaching for. It makes me feel like amidst everything — hope, peace, and a better world are possible. I’m so glad we can help share our concert series as a way to support you as you face the challenges each day brings.

This is the hope Groundswell is supporting across our community right now. We can’t show up to your churches or the cookout, so the least we can do is give you a good show. Tune in to our next #PrepareForPower concert July 2 from 6-7 p.m. with Oceanator and Lizzie No.  Curtis Wynn, the Chief Executive Officer of Roanoke Electric Cooperative & Affiliate Organizations will kick off the event with a few words.

Take care of yourselves!
