Groundswell’s Community Resilience Hubs equip communities with solar-powered microgrids to ensure critical services — like medical device power, emergency communication, and phone charging — during outages. These hubs also generate lasting benefits, using electricity bill savings to support job training, food distribution, and youth programs. Designed with and for local communities, Resilience Hubs strengthen energy abundance, resilience, and economic opportunity through clean energy solutions.

    A Resiliency Hub in Baltimore, Maryland, began making a transformative impact on the community around the City of Refuge Baltimore’s Level up Youth Center soon after it was installed in 2021, supporting the nonprofit’s community outreach during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. During that time, the City of Refuge met a community need for prepared meals that exploded from 250-300 prepared meals a week to 4,000 prepared meals a week (largely due to job loss and school closures). The Rev. Billy Humphrey credited the location’s status as a Resiliency Hub as one of the reasons why the City of Refuge was able to meet those needs.

    City of Refuge Baltimore, MD

    A Community Resiliency Hub in Baltimore, Maryland, will soon have a major impact on the community surrounding the City of Refuge Baltimore’s Main Campus. The solar and battery storage system at this Resiliency Hub will be owned by the nonprofit, making it possible for 100% of the solar savings from the project to support the remarkable work planned for this new City of Refuge location. Leveraging this savings and a mission-driven team, the City of Refuge’s Main Campus will seek to serve the whole person by hosting a life skills training area, daycare, and workforce development program, in addition to affordable housing units.

    A Community Resiliency Hub in Baltimore, Maryland, will soon have a major impact on the community surrounding Empowerment Temple AME in Baltimore, Maryland. The 10,000-member church actively seeks out new ways to serve its neighbors, building on the church’s more than 20 years of community service, including providing free meals, school supplies, and drive-thru COVID-19 tests during the COVID pandemic.
