Groundswell is partnering with the Housing Opportunities Commission of Montgomery County, Montgomery County Green Bank, and SunLight General Capital to develop an innovative multi-family housing community solar project in Silver Spring, Maryland. Paddington Square Apartments, located in Montgomery County just minutes from downtown, will be home to a 273 kW solar project providing approximately 91 households with access to locally generated clean energy.
Construction of this community solar project is expected to begin in Winter 2020. As part of Groundswell’s SharePower™ model, approximately 28 income-qualified households in the Paddington Square community will receive no-cost Empowered solar subscriptions. Each Empowered household will save an estimated $500 each year thanks to the project — an approximately 50 percent reduction in electricity costs. Over the course of the 20-year life of the solar project, aggregate energy savings for Empowered households will exceed $310,000.
The project was designed to be flexible enough to allow the Housing Opportunities Commission of Montgomery County to redevelop aspects of the property as needed over the duration of the solar project. The flexibility to make major renovations on the property will allow the Paddington Square Apartments to serve as a replicable model for delivering SharePower™ in partnership with other housing authorities.
Groundswell will be working closely with the Housing Opportunities Commission of Montgomery County to engage and enroll Paddington Square residents in this community solar project.
Sunlight General Capital, an experienced, values-aligned partner, is providing financing to this and other Groundswell projects in DC, Maryland, and other markets in the region. The Montgomery County Green Bank is also a financing partner on the project, providing local capital in support of the local clean energy, local social impact, and local job creation made possible by this project.
Groundswell serves as the co-developer and subscriber management organization for this project.
