North Carolina Smartflower, Rooted in Education

Innovative donation makes learning opportunities possible for students in Eden, NC

In November 2018, Mohawk Group and Groundswell teamed up to install a new Smartflower™ solar energy unit near three Rockingham County Schools in Eden, North Carolina. Mohawk Group is one of the world’s leading manufacturers and distributors of residential and commercial flooring. This project brings the benefits of solar power to the community where Mohawk is headquartered, creates educational opportunities for students, and advances Mohawk’s sustainability commitment to leave more handprints than footprints.

Mohawk Group engaged in this collaboration with Groundswell to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and offset the energy and resources used during some of its manufacturing processes. The Smartflower™ is located on the campus of Eden’s Central Elementary School, adjacent to Holmes Middle School and Morehead High School. Partners on the project hope this innovative donation will help spawn exciting learning opportunities for students at all three schools.

The solar installation in North Carolina is the second of 10 Smartflowers™ to be installed across the U.S. as part of a multi-year collaboration between Mohawk Group and Groundswell. Each Smartflower™ system will be established in an underserved community near educational institutions with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs. The first Smartflower™ in the partnership was also installed in Bronzeville, Illinois, in June 2018.
