Behind-the-Meter Project at Zakat Foundation of America

A new behind-the-meter solar installation at the Zakat Foundation of America in Bridgeview, Illinois, will soon provide clean, locally generated energy through the Illinois Solar For All program thanks to a partnership between Zakat Foundation of America, SunLight General Capital, My Community Plan Foundation, and Groundswell. This behind-the-meter project will reduce Zakat Foundation’s electricity costs and aid it in its ongoing humanitarian mission that is being carried out from its headquarters just 15 miles southwest of the Chicago loop.

Behind-the-meter solar projects through Groundswell use solar panels to generate energy at the location where energy is needed and consumed.

As part of the Illinois Solar for All program, this solar installation's focus will be on bringing the benefits of solar to those who need them most. ILSFA provides greater access to the clean energy economy for low-income communities through incentives that help make solar installations more affordable and result in measurable savings for participants.

This behind-the-meter solar project will provide approximately 135 MWh of solar energy to Zakat Foundation, reducing the organization's energy costs by roughly 65 percent. The savings will further aid the non-profit in its charitable and humanitarian efforts to provide aid to communities in need in the U.S. and abroad.

The project will be financed by SunLight General Capital, a woman-owned solar investment firm. Supreme Solutions, a Black-owned business, is the intended engineering, procurement, and construction firm for this project. Under the leadership of its executive director, the Rev. Mitchell Johnson, My Community Plan Foundation has made it possible for this project to encourage, empower, and engage with Zakat Foundation and to achieve a more sustainable community in Bridgeview, Illinois, and beyond.

Groundswell serves as the developer for this project, which is expected to begin construction in 2020.
